Project update Bergrheinfeld (Bavaria)

GESI-Bergrheinfeld-Web-04.2026

Following the ground investigation in March, preparations are in full swing.

The Franconian municipality of Bergrheinfeld near Schweinfurt is of central importance for the German energy infrastructure. This is because the SuedLink power line, which will transport wind energy from the north to southern Germany in future, runs to this location.

GESI Giga Batteries has therefore been active in Bergrheinfeld for more than two years and is driving forward one of the largest storage projects in Germany: a battery park with a capacity of 1000 megawatts is to be connected to the grid at the beginning of 2029 (see projection).

After we received the grid connection approval last year, we are now stepping up the pace: the ground investigation was carried out in March and we are currently purchasing land for environmental compensation in close coordination with the nature conservation authority.

They are also preparing the so-called application conference, which is due to take place in May. This is an expert discussion with representatives of the authorities and the public. At the same time, we are pressing ahead with the technical and electrical planning as well as the component and drainage planning. Construction work is expected to begin in the second half of next year.

Location: Bergrheinfeld

Output: 1,000 megawatts (1 gigawatt)

Planned commissioning: early 2029
