Large-scale battery storage planned in Bergrheinfeld near Schweinfurt – constructive exchange with interested citizens

Pullach, December 17. The planned construction of a battery energy storage system (BESS) in Bergrheinfeld will make the region a pioneer in the integration of renewable energies. The project is intended to help balance out fluctuations in the electricity grid, reduce the use of fossil fuel power plants and maximize the use of solar and wind energy.

“Stationary battery storage systems such as the planned BESS in Bergrheinfeld are indispensable for the energy transition. They store surplus electricity from renewable sources efficiently and make it available flexibly – exactly when it is needed,” explains Jens Wegmann, CEO of the project developer Green Energy Storage Initiative (GESI Giga Batteries).

Information event: citizens involved at an early stage

On December 16, 2024, an information event was held in the Bergrheinfeld parish hall where citizens were able to learn about the project and its benefits for the region. In addition to presentations on the function and significance of the BESS, there were information stands with further details on the technology, schedule and next steps.

Dialogue with local residents was the focus of the event, which met with great interest and was characterized by a constructive atmosphere. The GESI team was able to make it clear that the BESS in Bergrheinfeld offers tangible benefits for the region in addition to a pioneering role in the energy transition:

  • Efficient use of renewable energies: Surpluses from solar and wind power can be stored and used flexibly – with a dampening effect on electricity prices.
  • Climate protection: reducing dependence on fossil fuel power plants and lowering CO₂ emissions.
  • Security of supply: balancing out fluctuations in the electricity grid, strengthening the local electricity infrastructure and securing the energy supply.
  • Municipal budget: additional annual trade tax income in the seven-figure range.

Key technology for the energy transition

Battery storage systems are essential for a successful and affordable energy transition. “This project shows how storage solutions can integrate local communities into the energy transition and create economic benefits at the same time,” emphasizes GESI CEO Walter Raizner.

In 2023 alone, electricity worth 3.1 billion euros was lost due to a lack of storage options. The BESS will help to prevent such losses and make optimum use of renewable energy potential.

Next steps

The project is currently in the planning and approval phase. Once the inspections have been completed, construction is set to begin next year. Commissioning is planned for the end of 2028. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
